Tips for Applying Temporary Wallpaper Without any Hassle
  • Applying temporary wallpaper can be a straightforward process if you follow some key tips and tricks. Here's a guide to help you apply temporary wallpaper without any hassle:

 1. Prepare Your Surface:

  • Ensure that the surface you're applying the wallpaper to is clean, smooth, and dry. Remove any dust, dirt, or grease by wiping it down with a damp cloth and allowing it to dry completely. Start by thoroughly cleaning the wall or surface where you plan to apply the wallpaper. Remove any dust, dirt, or grease using a mild detergent and water. Rinse the wall with clean water and allow it to dry completely.
  • Inspect the surface for any cracks, holes, or imperfections. Fill in these areas with a spackling compound or wall filler. Use a putty knife to apply the filler, ensuring a smooth and even surface. Allow it to dry according to the manufacturer's instructions, and then sand it down lightly to create a seamless finish. If there is existing wallpaper on the surface, it's important to remove it before applying new wallpaper. Use a wallpaper steamer or a wallpaper removal solution to soften the adhesive, and then carefully peel off the old wallpaper. Be cautious not to damage the underlying wall.

 2. Measure and Cut:

  • Measure the dimensions of the area you want to cover with the wallpaper, and cut the wallpaper accordingly, leaving a few extra inches on all sides for adjustments. Measure the length of the wall from top to bottom, adding a few extra inches to allow for trimming. Use a tape measure to mark the desired length of the wallpaper on the back side of the wallpaper sheet.
  • If your wallpaper has a pattern, align it properly before cutting. Match the pattern at the top and bottom of the wallpaper sheet to ensure a seamless look. Use a level or a plumb line to make sure the pattern is straight. Repeat the measuring and cutting process for each strip of wallpaper that you need for the wall. Make sure to label each strip to keep them organized.  Remember to handle the wallpaper with care to avoid tearing or creasing it. Cutting the wallpaper accurately will ensure a professional-looking installation and a seamless pattern match.

 3. Use a Level:

  • Before you start applying the wallpaper, use a level to ensure that your first strip will be straight. This will help prevent crooked application and ensure a professional-looking finish. Place the level on the surface or object you want to check for levelness. Make sure it is resting securely and flat against the surface. Look at the bubble within the level. If the bubble is centered between the lines, it means the surface is level. If the bubble is off-center, it indicates that the surface is not level.
  •  If the surface is not level, you may need to make adjustments. For example, if you're hanging a picture, you can use a measuring tape to determine the correct height and then adjust the position accordingly. If you're installing wallpaper, you can use the level to ensure that the first strip is hung straight and level, which will serve as a guide for the rest of the installation.

4. Start at the top:

  • Every great story starts at the beginning, and for wallpapers, that's the top. By aligning your wallpaper with the ceiling or molding, you ensure a straight and seamless application. This becomes especially crucial if your wallpaper has a pattern that needs to align perfectly across the wall.
  • If your chosen wallpaper boasts a design or pattern, starting at the top also ensures that the most visible parts of the design are perfectly positioned. Plus, it helps plan how the pattern will flow and where it might need adjustments or alignments further down the wall.
  • Enhance the top of the wall with decorative crown molding. Opt for intricate designs or unique shapes to make a statement. You can also paint the molding in a contrasting color to create a visual contrast. Consider adding architectural details at the top of the wall, such as decorative cornices or arches. These elements can add depth and character to the statement wall.

 5. Peel and Stick:

  • Most temporary wallpapers are peel-and-stick, meaning you just need to peel off the backing and stick the wallpaper to the wall. Start at one corner and gradually peel off the backing while smoothing the wallpaper onto the wall with your hands or a wallpaper smoother tool.
  • Make sure the surface where you will apply the peel and stick material is clean, dry, and smooth. Remove any dirt, debris, or old adhesive to ensure a strong and even bond. Peel off the backing paper from the adhesive side of the peel and stick material. Be sure to work slowly and carefully to avoid wrinkling or tearing the material.  Carefully apply the peel and stick material to the surface, starting at one end and smoothing it out as you go. Use a squeegee or a flat tool to remove any air bubbles and ensure a smooth, even surface.

 6. Smooth Out Air Bubbles:

  • As you apply the wallpaper, use a wallpaper smoother or a to smooth out any air bubbles or wrinkles. Work from the center outwards to push out any trapped air. Before you begin, identify where the air bubbles are located and how many there are. This will help you determine the best approach for smoothing them out. If the material is heat-resistant, you can use a hair dryer or heat gun to apply heat to the bubble. This will soften the adhesive and allow you to smooth out the material more easily. If the bubbles are too large or numerous, you may need to reposition the material and start again. Carefully peel off the material and reapply it, being sure to smooth out any bubbles as you go.

 7. Work in Sections:

  • If you're covering a large area, work in manageable sections to prevent the wallpaper from sticking to itself or becoming misaligned. This will also help you maintain control and ensure a neat application. Determine which sections are the most important or time-sensitive, and prioritize those first. This will help you make the most of your time and ensure that you meet your deadlines. Before you begin, gather all the supplies you will need for each section. This will help you work more efficiently and avoid the need to stop and search for supplies in the middle of a project.  When working in a section, work methodically from one end to the other. This will help you avoid missing spots or overlooking details.

 8. Smooth Out Any Edges:

  • Once all the wallpaper is applied, go over the edges with a wallpaper smoother or your hands to ensure they're securely adhered to the wall.
  • Sanding is a common technique used to smooth out rough edges. Use sandpaper of an appropriate grit for the material you are working with. Start with a coarser grit to remove any roughness or unevenness, and then gradually move to finer grits for a smoother finish. Sand in a circular or back-and-forth motion, applying even pressure. For smaller or more detailed edges, you can use a file or rasp to shape and smooth them. These tools are especially useful for working with metal or hard materials. Use them in a controlled manner, applying gentle pressure and working in one direction to avoid creating additional roughness.
  • If there are gaps or imperfections along the edges, you can use fillers or putty to smooth them out. Apply the filler or putty to the edges and then use a putty knife or similar tool to level and smooth it. Allow it to dry according to the manufacturer's instructions before sanding or painting over it.

 9. Enjoy Your New Look:

  • Once the wallpaper is applied and any excess is trimmed, step back and admire your work! Temporary wallpaper can transform a space quickly and easily, so take the time to enjoy the results. I don't have the ability to see or appreciate visual aesthetics like wallpaper, I'm glad you're enjoying the new look.
